James Donald Pittard

James Donald Pittard, 75, of Southern Shores, died Sunday, June 30, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer. 

Mr. Pittard was born December 20, 1937 in Halifax County, NC to the late James Ambrose and Elsie Hux Pittard. 

An alumni of Aurelian Springs High School, he was a graduate of Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School, and North Carolina State University. 

Mr. Pittard worked for 38 years at the Newport News Shipyard and then retired to the North Carolina Outer Banks.  He was also a member of Duck United Methodist Church. 

Mr. Pittard was a loving husband and father whose family and friends knew him as a giving man, generous with his time and talents.

Mr. Pittard is survived by his wife Mary Lee White Pittard of the home; Two sons Robert Bruce Pittard and wife Karen of Carrollton, Va.; James Donald Pittard, Jr. and wife Deborah of Lynchburg, Va.  Daughter Leslie Godfrey and husband Brannon of Portsmouth, Va., and 7 grandchildren.  Mr. Pittard is also survived by his brother Doug Pittard and wife Linda of Roanoke Rapids, NC; his sisters; Joyce Pittard Cobb of Roanoke Rapids, NC; and Jackie Pittard Norman and husband George of Wilson, NC, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 5, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Hawkins Chapel United Methodist Church in Roanoke Rapids, with Rev. Gene Cobb and Rev. John Tyson officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  Following the service, family and friends will gather at Mr. Pittard’s boyhood home for food and fellowship.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions be made to Duck United Methodist Church, 1214 Duck Rd., P.O. Box 8010 Duck, NC 27949.
